Happy Monday, InsideEVs readers. We start the week with some not-so-happy news.
The U.S. Department of Transportation finalized the far less stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy norms today, pushing automakers to sell more gas-guzzling cars over electric vehicles.
By 2031, automakers will need to reach an average fleetwide fuel economy target of just 34.9 miles per gallon, down from 50.4 mpg finalized by the Biden administration. Many hybrids on sale today already deliver far better fuel economy than the revised 2031 number.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which sets the CAFE rules, said the new targets will lower the purchase price of cars, but also increase America’s gas consumption by billions of gallons by 2050 while increasing emissions.
