The regulatory minefield for self-driving cars just got a lot more interesting. As The Verge spotted this week, a bill under consideration in New Jersey would require autonomous cars in the state to use multiple sensors besides cameras. There’s one specific company that’s made it its mission to only use cameras in autonomous driving, and that’s Tesla.
If passed, the law would effectively bar Tesla from bringing its budding Robotaxi service to the state—unless the automaker overhauled its hardware setup to look more like Waymo’s.
