The German automakers have been lobbying hard to reverse the European Union’s scheduled 2035 gas car ban. But Volvo has a different take, one that, to me, is more grounded in reality: Western automakers are already behind China in the EV race.
If companies stop investing now, that gap is only going to get wider.
It’s a reminder that countries and companies aren’t making choices in a vacuum. The world is steadily advancing towards electrification, and costs have already fallen dramatically. The only question is really how long we want automakers to keep milking the past, rather than investing in the future.
